These bearings are manufactured with steel, and are composed of a cage assembly and thrust roller, where the cylindrical rollers or the needle rollers are radically configured in the cage and a disc form bearing ring is provided to support the one directional axial load. During mounting, we can directly use either the shaft or housing as the raceway without the bearing ring. This enables a compact and lightweight construction to its advantage. Thrust Roller Bearings | Image Resource : bearingtips.com Design Considerations:
Double Row Tapered Roller Bearings: These have very high degree of rigidness or stiffness and can accommodate heavy axial and radial loads depending on the designing. They are commonly used in hoisting equipments, gear boxes and rolling mills in mining industry. They provide less friction, with axial loads bi-directional and long service life. Since there are two rows of rollers, they are most suited for heavy axial and radial loads, hence providing high load carrying capacity. They also provide finest load distribution, reduced vibration and noise relatively. Taper Lock Bearing Design: It consists of a bearing assembly comprising of an adapter that is lockable to a shaft. There is also a second adapter that defines another second axial bore. The taper lock bearing makes the installation much easier and offer more advantages when compared to plain bearings. However, while installation, if the running clearance reduction is not accurately measured, there is a risk that the bearing can get wobbly and fail prematurely. Temperature Limits The permissible temperature for thrust roller bearings can be judged by the cage itself, the type of lubricant and the dimensional stability of rollers and bearing washers. The bearings are manufactured to withstand heat stabilised to at least 250 °F. The same permissible operating temperatures of rollers and bearing washers can be used on brass cages as well. The temperature limits for the lubricants should be calculated according to Traffic Light Concept. The cylindrical roller thrust bearings can accommodate axial load at a higher range and impact loads. The bearing require very little axial space and very rigid as well and must not be accompanied with any radial load. The cage thrust assembly, housing washer, shaft washer and cylindrical roller can be separately mounted and thus making the design easy for maintenance and inspection. The roller ends are slightly comforted to alter the line of contact between the roller and the raceway, in order to prevent stress peaks, which provide an extended service life of bearing.
